Piero Cappuccilli as Michele. Sylvia Sass as Giorgetta. In this moving scene, the middle-aged Michele tries to rekindle the affection of his adulterous younger wife Giorgetta by evoking her past love for him and recalling happier days before the death of their child. He fails, and is left alone with his suspicions that Giorgetta is in love with another man (she is), but he cannot figure out who it is.

  • My favourite Puccini opera the best sung I have ever heard is the 1962 Decca recording with Tebaldi/Merril/Del Monaco, all at their very best and an outstanding recording as a bonus. The 60's was the golden age of opera!

Silvia Sass was already suffering from voice deterioration when this video was made.

  • Sass and Cappuccilli is made for this.

Most beautifully sung and with impressive acting.

Puccini was never darker, was never more verismo.

    Great scenography too.

  • Piero sei semplicemente IMMENSO

  • This is so beautiful. He is my favourite Michele, next to Tito Gobbi...

  • Gianni Schicchi must be in the same category . Perhaps one should say Il trittico is his great masterpiece, but I'm not that fond of Suor Angelica.

  • Musically the boat is rolling and pitching. The whole effect is one of physical and mental instability. I get a little sea sick.

  • This opera may well be Puccinis "Masterpiece". The influence of Debussy is unmistakable, but Puccini adds even more wonderful touches.I actualy think that the opening of the musical "Wicked" was inspired by this opera.

  • Thanks for posting this. I've seen it in la Scala in Milano and it was gorgious!

  • A terrific scene!!!

  • This is a heart-moving scene. Great singing and great acting from both. I think Cappuccilli is excellent in this Puccini role.
