I was always told that they should turn away from you.

@AlizaKathryn In lunging you want them to turn towards you... if that horse turned away from me the lunge line would get tangled around him every time he turned.

I think you lunged him really well. A lot of people fail to realize the whip is an extension of your arm, not something to constantly beat on the horse with.

@42sundown..but easy to recognize with a little study. A little cant is acceptable but too much is to be avoided. Some greenhorn horses want to cant when turning and this can be detrimental and dangerous too because turning with too much cant makes the horse out of control. Look at the shins of old time barrel racers and you can see the results of too much cant and how quick a horse can fall into a barrel without neaning to. Watch the modern reining and barrel horses follow a nose

@AlizaKathryn..If a horse on a lunge line or lead shank gets turned away from you and gets his shoulder into the rope, it can be very dangerous. You cannot control them if they are serious about this move. Turn it loose to save being dragged under the horse and recatch it is about all you can do at this time. You maybe talking about "cant", which is the attitude assumed by the horses body when he canters. Left lead, body cants to right, Right lead, body cants to left. Subtle..

I have a horse i cant lunge but a few times w/ or w/out line on he just keeps backing up around and around what should i do to correct this?

@TheMustangTrainer my horse will lunge going left but likes to try to follow me when i try to get her to go to the right and we dont have a round pen which makes it really hard what can i do to fix this problem?
