This important World cup qualifier was played under so very typical Faroese weather conditions: wind, rain and on a waterlogged pitch. It was really a wonder that Croatian referee decided not to cancel the game.

Faroese, who won the away game in Luxembourg 2-0 earlier that year, were again a better side. They created some clear chances but it was just a few minutes before the end, when John Petersen was brought down in a penalty area and Jens Kristian Hansen converted a penalty, as they got all three points.

By winning this game, the Faroese National Team scored seven points in a qualifying group a record for them. Since then, they have never got more than one.

It is sad to say, but this match, played seven and a half years ago, is still the very last competitive victory by the Faroes. Allan Simonsen lasted only two games more and then left to coach Luxembourg - however, without same kind of success, he enjoyed during his four qualifying campaigns with the Faroes.

  • It's a long time since I saw a game at this level played on a pitch like that - actually makes it interesting

  • @bobbymozza When it was a maximum period of only five years between Faroese victories - they defeated Malta in a friendly - in Toftir of course - in August of 2004! ;-)

  • @Farerets

    shhhh i don't tell everyone ;)

The Friendly matches are just as important to the Faroe Islands though.

Long may there be friendlies against low ranked teams.

  • @bobbymozza If we only count competitive matches, that indeed was the last Faroese victory until Lithuania 8 years later.

  • I know they're on a budget, but when are they going to get a roof for the stadium? lol

It's like building a house, but saying "you know what, we're abit short of cash, so we'll just build the rest of the house and leave the roof".

Just kidding. The match resembled swamp football at times. Quite funny seeing that player get tackled by a puddle.

Shame the stadium was mostly empty though. We'll fight them on beaches, we'll fight them on the shores, but if it rains we'll just stay at home. lol

  • @MarcusBowen

No,Then 6 months later win against Liechtenstein, followed by another win against Liechtenstein. Match after after was a 2-2 draw against Scotland. Strangely enough the match after that one, was 2-0 loss against Lithuania.

  • Then 7 years later 2-1 success vs Lithuania! :D.

  • Gott nokk oysandi regn :-) Hehe typiskt Føroyar... Bólturin rullar næstan slett ikki... :-)

  • I am killjoy whit my comment, but the game was played ten days before the World Trade Center... It isn't football I know...

  • I was at this game! Have never been so wet and cold in my life but the Faroes won so it was all worth it. Amazing day
