Cantiga de Santa Maria 383 - O ffondo do mar (2 voices, vielle): How Saint Mary of Següença protected a woman who fell over-board into the sea, and how Saint Mary saved her from the waters and restored her to health. Saint Mary, Our Lady of great mercy. transforms the bottom of the sea into firm land for those who have faith in Her.

The Holy Virgin, Mother of the God of Glory, accomplished a great and most marvellous miracle for a woman whose heart was willing to serve Her night and day. It happened in Estremadura, Saint Mary, Our Lady of great mercy ..

In the city of Seguença. which is a very rich bishopric;
beside a large church there is secluded spot,
known as Santa Maria la Vella,
to which this honest woman gladly would go, and it was her parish. Saint Mary. Our Lady of great mercy ..

The woman had a daughter whom she loved most dearly,
and they both desired to go and see

the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem,
and for a safer journey, she paid a person to guide them. Saint Mary, Our Lady of great mercy ..

The two women set out, crossed the sea without mishap, disembarked at Acre, and from there went on to visit the Holy Sepulchre and the other Holy Places. With great difficulty, they found a ship for their return, but during the voyage they both fell overboard, first the daughter, then the mother:

And as she fell. she cried out at the top of her voice:
"Help me. glorious Holy Mary, Santa Maria la Vella of Següença,
in whom I trust! May my pilgrimage be accomplished.'
And immediately, from the heavens on high, Saint Mary. Our Lady of great mercy ...

the Holy Virgin hastened to the scene and descended
to the bottom of the sea, beneath the ship,
where She found the woman and brought her up from the depths,
safe and sound, and looking well. Saint Mary. Our Lady of great mercy ...

Filled with wonderment, all those who witnessed this miracle honoured the Virgin Mary, and the woman, too, at the church of Santa Maria la Vella.
