This is the original full length theme to Grandstand, which is News Scoop composed by Herbert Leonard Stevens, and it was one of the most iconic BBC TV themes of the 1960s, this theme was used from 1958 till 1971.
This popular theme can still be heard being used on TV to accompany old sporting and news clips. and in TV commercials to give a sense of nostalgia.

Another great memory!! Thanks for posting. I remember being anxious to get the "only David Coleman" bit over and done with and see some actual sport.
