Alex was a participant in the 2009 Siesta Key Triathlon that was held on Sunday October 4th on beautiful Siesta Key. It was a ½ mile swim followed by a 14-mile bike ride and topped off with a 5k run. Team PIKIDS (Palm Island Kids) is a relay team consisting of Alex (swim) and his friends Alexander Burnett (bike), and Meg VanDeventer (run). Although he trained and was ready to go Alex Burnett caught the flu and was unable to participate in the actual race at the last minute. Megs dad Paul was gracious, and in good enough shape, to step in and anchor the bike portion of the relay. Everyone did great and had a wonderful time. Meg ran with her mom and watching her at the finish, looked as though she could have ran another 5k!
At the beginning of the event you see Alex talking to his trainer Agnees. She won her portion of the event and her team also won overall. We are grateful such fine athletes as her and her husband are training Alex. If you watch carefully, as Alex exits the water, 2 young guys that are in pretty good shape precede him out of the water. Considering how fast he ran to the checkpoint, if the swim part were only slightly longer he probably would have beaten them!
