One thing they forgot. DON'T do the Forsworn Conspiracy and Escape from the Mine quests before you try to buy the house. The option to buy just disappears. It stays in your quest list, but neither the Jarl nor the Steward ever mention in again. Bummer.

@thommeister Weird. I did both those things before I got the house and I was fine. I finished everything with the Forsworn (including killing off the Forsworn leader from the mines) before I ended up getting the house and all its upgrades. Might be it's own bug.

windhelm or solitude is much better. windhelm is cheapest of the two

I would buy a house in windhelm but, ti's too exspensive, but markath is much cheaper so yeah, fuck my whiterun house

@claymation1nation Yes you can buy more than 1 house. I have one in Solitude and another one in Whiterun.

@razzourus During main quest (quest Season Unending), General Tullius and Ulfric Stormcloak fight about exchanging some territories including Markarth. If the Stormcloaks take the Reach eventually, Thongvar Silver-Blood becomes the Jarl of Markarth and he will offer you becoming a Thane and the possibility of buying a house in Markarth. i'm not sure if its true or not i just copied and paste from a website.
