That's why you make a face cut ("notch").
And why you would put a line to prevent a fall to the right (line going off left from the tree here.) Also, the higher you attach the line to the tree (the sound part) the more torque about the base (the more effective the pull.)
How did nobody get killed here?

I'm glad no one was hurt. Why all males think they know how to cut down trees is beyond me. 90% don't get maimed/killed only by the grace of God.
