Every year the EMRC sets up a modular layout at the Flinthills Mall in Emporia, KS for the Christmas season (like I do for the museum). It's up from November to a week after New years. On New Years day and the 7th I took some of my trains there to run them.
For the first day I had an auto carrier and doublestack train (which required putting lots of weight in the bottom of the doublestacks) pulled at first by a set of Missouri Pacific and Rio Grande engines, with AWVR 1206 trailing. In short order though I had one engine overheat due to getting too much power. After a little work they ran fine. The 2nd set was a mix of Santa Fe power that ran great.
Besides the overheating problem the train ran perfectly. No derailments ( O_o ) and just a couple of uncouplings.
On the last day of the display I brought an intermodal train and again 2 sets of engines. The first a mix of Rio Grande, SP, and SSW engines, then a BNSF/ATSF set with a KCS SD-40-2 thrown in for spice.
The Espee engines ran good, though a couple of engines were constantly derailing one wheel. The 2nd set really had problems. The lead engine is an older Athearn SD-75M, and it you have even the smallest problem with your track it'll find it (I heard these early Genesis SD-70's had a problem with this).
.
At one point it derailed on a switch, uncoupled from the rest of the train and pulled itself into the clear on a spur track, while the rest of the train continued on!
I wonder if anyone noticed the custom AWVR SD40-2 locomotive from the movie Unstoppable in the lash up pulling the container train?
