Israel and the Palestinians to resume direct Middle East peace talks

http://www.timesofearth.com/Middle-East/?NT=&nid=26436 Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to announce on Friday that President Barack Obama will invite leaders of the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority to begin direct peace talks on September 2 in Washington.

Clinton will issue a statement on the direct negotiations at 11:00 a.m. eastern time (1600 GMT) in the State Department. At the same time, the rest of the Quartet, namely the United Nations, the European Union and Russia, will also announce the coordinated statement.

The negotiations are expected to be hosted by Obama, who has urged both sides to resume the direct talks that broke down in December 2008, in order to reach a permanent agreement that could lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
