Silverwood

This sculpture is at Silverwood Park in St. Anthony Village, MN, The Pod utilizes the Oak Tree which was struck by lightning and had to be removed. The The armature was made from salvaged tree branches from around Minneapolis. Some came from the city of Minneapolis tree trimming crews. This particular piece was begun in the summer of 2010 on the open field at the Walker Art Center.
The structure was built collaboratively on site.

The object has continued to evolve into its present incarnation. The Pod has been exposed to the Minnesota seasons for 1 year. The structure was reinforced with branches and leaves from fallen Oak tree. (branches removed from the tree hold on to their leaves even after they are dried.) The layer of leaves will serve as insulation in cold weather. The opening is at the bottom to prevent heat escape. The pod continues to evolve as conditions change. The piece, if left in the weather will eventually degrade. The Pod is constructed only with branches and twine The branches are used when green and freshly cut. This way they retain maximum flexibility and strength. Most trees work well with this method, with the exception of trees like Box-elder or Cottonwood, which break too easily. The branches initially are held in place with twine. Eventually the twine becomes unnecessary as the innate tension in the branches holds the structure together. The entire pod is held aloft using strong rope anchored at four points on the pod and is hanging from two separate limbs of an Oak Tree.
