You don't really need a square. Circle works VERY well in my experience.

You can group a number of control points together and control all with one slider.

I really like this program. I was wondering if the Control Point has the capability to select an area by clicking on points so that you can select an area that is square vice a circle shape? In other words say have 4 clicks for 4 points and have it in a square shape that better matches the shadow you were demonstrating on. I think this would allow you to better select the area in finer detail.
