Message from Q.DF:

The hobby aircraft that took the video of the airplane landing was north of the Fraser River in an industrial area and over a kilometer away from the edge of the airport. The AGL was about 120m. The hobby aircraft could not have possibly been in any flight path. There was no danger to civil aviation when the video was taken. Had a commercial jet been exactly where the hobby craft was, we would have had a much larger problem than me trying to take a video of an airplane.

Use of wide angle lens and software zoom provided a distorted sense of height and distance. The hobby aircraft was nowhere near the airplane filmed, contrary to media reports.

In hindsight, admittedly, it was a mistake to take such a video and post on youtube.

After I became aware of the media reports, I was dismayed that some Canadian media decided to tell a sensationalized account of what happened. Stories about near misses and pictures of the zoomed in video were shown while neglecting to account for the evident use of software zoom that many others who viewed the video have pointed out. There was no near miss and the hobby aircraft was never anywhere close to the landing aircraft.

It also seems to me that a certain toy model users' group decided use this video to promote itself and its agendas -- claiming that this video could spell regulation or the end of the hobby. If this organization truly wants to promote the hobby and the democratization of the technology, it could engage in conversations about how we could make the technology more accessible to hobby, commercial, and institutional use; how UAV technology could be beneficial to search and rescue, conservation, and public safety just to name a few possible uses; how we could include the development of UAV technology in our post secondary curriculum when other countries have already done so. Instead, the organization decided to take on a fear campaign by scaring the public with the worst potential use of UAV -- which my video does not represent. Judging by some of responses threatening violence, I can't help but think that as a society we really haven't progressed much since colonial Massachusetts 1692 (To be fair, it is a very small sample of hobby fanatics, so probably not representative.)

Finally, there was never any malicious intent in capturing the video. Ever since childhood, I have been fascinated by aviation. It was simply this passion about flight that made me take the video. There is nothing nefarious about it.
