    That's the crank. The semi-circular part is a weight to counter-balance the crank-pin and connecting-rod end, just like the counterweights on an automotive crankshaft.

    Being a steam engine, it would be reversible with the appropriate valve-gear Basically, the valve eccentric has to rotate 180 degrees from its current position to make the engine run in reverse. Reversible steam engines have a variety of mechanisms to achieve this.

  • Please can I ask: what is the function of the axe-head shaped (semi circular) metal attached to the piston rod end-flywheel axle? Can the flywheel also rotate easily backwards?
