top of Mauna Kea

this video was taken on the summit of Mauna Kea on Hawaii's big island. We had just driven up the almost 14thousand feet, having been at sea level earlier in the afternoon. It looks like the surface of the moon up there, really neat. This is a part of our trip to Hawaii in december of 08

Mauna Kea is taller than Everest by over 1000m ****when measured from root to summit**** (over 10 000m in all), but a very large portion of the mountain is under the Pacific ocean, so it only rises to 4200m above sea level (with about 6000m underwater), while Everest rises about 8848 meters above sea level.

Most people including myself consider Everest the tallest mountain in the world at 29,028 feet. But indeed if you count the portion of Mauna Kea under the sea, it is taller than Everest by nearly a mile.

me and my whole battalion(us army) climbed 8 miles of mauna kea, from 9,000ft to the top.. took me 5 hours..
