Considering that fresnel lenses are better in every way including cheaper, lighter, easier to use, easier to carry, this solar lighter is probably the most useless product I've ever seen. More so than the sham wow. Maybe it would be good for a science classroom to show the principle of parabolic dishes but nothing else.
-
Also, there is a device that is lighter, cheaper, smaller, which also starts fires more easily as well as having alternative functions. Wallet-size fresnel lenses that cost about a dollar and are the size of a credit card and lay flat. You can keep your tinder on the ground rather than having to handle it in a holder and you can also using as a magnifying lens for stitching or removing splinters.

It is too big and bulky. It is made of several parts that can be lost and the worst - it is limited to sun light. In survival situations or even in camping most of the time you'll need your fire is at night.
-
This would be completely useless here in the UK....as we get the sun about 20 days a year!

I purchased one and it really does works! It lit my cigerette in seconds. I even lit a fire with mine using tissue paper and loose pine needle...
-
very well. 5 people tried it with in 5 minutes. Aiming was simple from ages 25 - 65 and they lit right up. At 1st everyone said 'that will never work' - It did
YES, we have a bad habit.
this is cool... but i don't really see the point. Its big and bulky, and expensive for what it does. Just go to Wal-mart and buy a magnifying glass. Remove the lens from its framing and throw the frame out. Keep the lens in your first aid kit wrapped in a microfiber. A magnifying glass is a great tool for first aid, AND for starting fires. It doesn't take long to learn how to focus the light. Especially if you burnt ants when you were little. >: p theres probably tutorial videos.

@MACHINESATTACK Fresnel lenses are even better because they are flat and very lightweight. Conveniently, also sell those. :)

How hot does the manufacturer say it gets? For example the light my fire firesteel says 5,500°F. On a slightly cloudy day is there any hope of using this?

I couldn't find any mention of a temp rating. I had some luck on a cloudy day, but it did take longer than when the sun was not hindered. The manufacturer actually says that a high powered flashlight will work as well, so maybe an HID or something similar could work. I'll try it out this week.
