People fear and sometimes hate things they cannot understand, and being a genius and gay are two of those things.

Pitty, disgraceful, shameful...and major regret. Ridiculous unfairness...and I will never undertsand why it was considered a "ilness" and why there is still so much stigma around gay people, and so much stereotyping. Such a loss...this man could have achieved even more great things but he was killed by many's ignorance...I am so angry with how ridiculous people were and some still are. Gladly things are changing and hopefully they will keep changing, its not yet the end of it.

@seanalicious100 I understand your point but the fact remains that it was never against the law to be "gay". Just trying to be accurate.

@mikelheron20 ...When you legislate against the "act", you're legislating against the identity. Why do people choose to parse words like that? It's like the people who say "gay people have the right to get married...just to someone of the opposite sex." It's ludicrous that people think these arguments are rational at all.

I hate to be pedantic but it was never against the law to be gay.

Just seen the Channel 4 documentary, and never knew the full story. I am feeling bitter at hearing the news of a man who done so much yet the treatment he received was disgusting... so so sad to hear about that! But then just so typical of society, always an enquiry after the damage is done.. then people are sorry. But good to hear the words written by Gordon Brown.

@jsperess I think what the person (below you) is trying to say is that there's not really any point to this apology; he's already a highly respected figure and has countless books, documentry programs etc dedicated to him. I think it would have been more appropriate if they had done a 90 minute documentry for his 100th birthday. You're right about people with prejudices, very good times. All the more reson why I ask "Was this apology really needed?"

31,102 people are gay.
@amigagames "Was this apology really needed?" - Yes it is. You won't believe how much power simple words like "I'm sorry" have to human psyche. You can't begin a new chapter without admitting to the wrong of the past. I wondered in 2008 whether Australian Prime Minister's apology for the treatment of Aborigines 50-60 years ago even matter - but apparently it did for the people who were wronged; with thousand of peoples crying when it finally happened. Dont ask me why(i don't know) but it matters
