SPECIAL PRESENTATION! "Chasing Cass Scenic Railroad".

An "alternate" look at the annual Cass Railfan Weekend, as taken by a non-participant in the annual Weekend's festivities. Since I wasn't able to determine whether I would have time to visit for the full weekend, my friend Keith and I decided at last minute to drive down on Sunday and chase the train as it headed up the mountain. As this footage shows, there are still quite a few interesting sites...even for those who are not able to purchase tickets.

The footage includes CSRR Shay #11 and Big Six arriving at the water tank, Shay #4 switching the log train, the famous "Three Train Race", the passenger train crossing Back Mountain Road, both the passenger train and freight train crossing Gum Road, and footage of both trains doing runbys on Gum Curve taken from a distant field. This scene alone offers a completely unique view, and allows the viewer to hear the whistle as it echoes across the mountains. Recorded Sunday, May 22, 2011.

  • The Cass Scenic is on my bucket list for sure

  • @kelbym07 Yeah it really is a great place for railfans. If you live far away, I would recommend you go to a Railfan Weekend, but try and take a vacation long enough to ride and photograph some of our other trains as well. I do recommend you set aside time at least for the Tygart Flyer or Cheat Mountain Salamander...along with Cass they take you through some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the country. Nature is plentiful...very few homes or garbage along the right-of-ways. 8D

  • Was the shot at Gum Curve taken from the campground?

  • @traindude666 @bullfrog1954 The shot of Gum Curve is probably about 300 yards from the entrance to the campground along Gum Road. This is really the best distance shot of the curve as it appears today. bullfrog, unfortunately you can no longer see the S-curve or anything above the second switchback at all from the road...you have to be right next to the track or you can't see anything due to tree growth. The smoke at 15:58 is near the S curve actually. Thanks for watching! 8D

  • WOW NUMBER 6 IS A BEAST!

  • Great stuff! Makes me all the more ticked off that I missed the event this year :-(

  • Great stuff!! kg

  • Great vid! Really like #11 crossing Back Mtn RD in the rain! Had a few rain excursions myself! Also cool seeing the train come out of the fog at Gum Road! The whistle on #4 still sounds the same as when I was last there! But after Gum Road you have a "distance" shot-that's one spot on Gum Curve I don't recognize! Guess it looks different in the field looking up at the train! I have a similar shot from the S-curve looking down at the distant train from 1987 or 88. I gotta get out there again!!

  • i enjoyed seeing myself a few times, GREAT video
