The Space Lady | Major Tom | 1990

The Space Lady is San Francisco's most enchanting street musician. Whether on keyboard or accordion, her music stops sidewalk traffic even in this multi-task town. The Space Lady usually performs wearing a whimsical steel helmet with angel wings, which makes her easy to recognize but belies the credibility of her haunting vocal interpretations of well known songs. Mister SF always requests Time After Time or Spanish Harlem. A San Francisco favorite is Over the Rainbow, of course. The Space Lady, whose real name is Susan Dietrich, made only a full length CD of San Francisco sessions for sale. The disc features Susan performing live on Casio with effects. You haven't heard Ghost Riders in the Sky until you've heard the Space Lady sing it. A few of her tracks, including her underground hit version of Major Tom, are also featured on some compilations.

  • @huckdunsany

Cool!!! This is San Francisco, man - I've heard crazier! :)

Definitely pass on my info to her; I'd love to have her on the air! -dj Nobody

  • @miramiros This will probably sound crazy, but "The Space Lady" is my mom! I'll pass this along to her - she's still playing much (though not on the street), and would probably love to talk about the "good old days" with an appreciative interviewer....

  • @misterwarwick

Aw bummer. Thanks for letting me know. I found her on myspace, but I haven't heard back so I figured she stopped doing music. If you're still in contact with her, is it possible for you to give her my email? Maybe she' s interested in having a phone interview for KUSF in EXILE; that'd be fun. Or if she ever comes to SF, let her know she's welcome on my show. Here's my email: dj_nobody2u@yahoo.com Thanks!

  • @miramiros - I'm a friend of Susan's from back then. She moved to Colorado many years ago, got a nursing degree. She is well as far as I know. She has a myspace

She Rocks. Totally. Amazing voice and sensibility.

  • where do I find this woman? I need to have her on KUSF In EXILE radio, stat! -nobody
