Shackleton WR982 Anniversary engine run

On the 30th of March 2008 to celebrate the 90th year of the RAF formation a four engine run of Shackleton WR982 was carried out at Gatwick Aviation Museum

Thats weird, I did the final cround crew departure for this one from St Mawgan back in mid-70's. I though she went to Hendon?

No fire extinguishers for start up? That would have been a chargeble offence.

@tvfilmglamdirector Yeah, sure we had fire extinguishers, around the aircraft are about four or five, just don't have any with lances on! This one went straight to Cosford. I was actually there when she arrived. Strange to find yourself working on the same airframe 25 years later.

Yes, you are correct, only WR982 and the South African 1722 are runners. 1722 has only quite recently been grounded due to a lack of qualified crew, not many hours mind you either!

There are two MKII's runnable, WR963 at Coventry and potentially WL790 in the USA.

I think 209 Squadron fle the MkII's - XF704 was in Gibralter 1962-71 and carried out the mid atlantic routes. XF702 the sister frame was also on the same route, but came back via St Mawgan in 1978. 205 Squadron was always the poor relation and i feel those who were trapped in 205 have some short term memory loss.

205 Squadron flew the MkII Shack, I believe that XF704 was a MKIII. There were a number of airframes on 205 and they would vary depending upon the maintenance schedule. They would be returned to the UK and another aircraft would be sent as a replacement. So you can see that that there was an almost continual rotation during their time on 205. Having said that it should be possible to come up with a list of serials that served on 205. Sadly XF704 is not one of them.

hi all, i'm looking for some help, my dad worked on the air frames of shackletons in the raf in the 205 squadron in the 50's and 60's, i've built a model of a shackleton in his memory and would like to know what the no's of the planes where in that squadron the one i've built has the no XF704 but don't know if thats right .

Me too! Log book tells me on 10th. April, 1959 out of St. Mawgan! Was a scrawny ATC/CCF Cadet @ the time!

How glorious to see a Mk 3 running her griffons used to be on the restoration crew at Newark Air Museum on WR 977 in the early 90's great video 5*

What a dream it would be to see one of these flying over a major UK airshow!!!

Flying Legends would suffice and any Shackleton will do. XH558 managed maybe the next project should focus on a flying Shackleton in the UK!
