1959 Deutz diesel engine running on used engine oil

This 50 year old Deutz engine has been modified to run on waste/used engine oil. It is currently hooked up to an electrical generator. I think the reason it runs so well is that this particular eng...

I have a 95 powerstroke, I just dump the old motor oil back in to the tanks 3.5gl
to 34gl runs great! Also if you pre-heated that oil prior to injector to thin it up, it would be easy to start no
WD40 nessary. Great video! A+

I was wondering how well a modern diesel (no pre-combustion chamber type) would run - that's very interesting. Gets me thinking -maybe I should be using a pickup truck? Would be nice to get one with a PTO then I could use the truck as a driver, plow and generator.

Hello,

I'm just curious about how much hours the engine now has under its belt running on waste engine oil. Did you inspect the valves and piston for carbon build up? Just like to know because I have a 1937 Lister CS that I would like to run on (filtered) WMO I guess that with some pre heat it will just run fine, but i'm afraid that the carbon build up will be a issue.

Regards,
Marcel (the Netherlands)

The engine has about 100 hours on it since it was converted. I'm not going to strip it down until the engine shows signs of degradation - hard to start, run rough, smoking, power output down, etc. so I really don't know at this point. Your engine should run well if it has a pre-combustion chamber since WO is harder to ignite the small space is ideal. Good luck

Mark, absolutely awesome. I like the idea putting that engine on a vehicle with the catalytic converter and muffler will run fairly quite. That conversion will take some labor to do it, but definitely it's worth it. Average $30 week fuel coast
adds up to $1.5 K a year. If I lived close by I would surely help you with that conversion. good job and keep up th good work.

Mark, don't you think any diesel engine would run with
waste oil? (Of course has to be filtered an all that at first)

thanks for the comment - much appreciated. I think a more modern diesel would run on waste oil for sure but its only the low tech old ones that have a pre-combustion built into the head and thats the secret to how well it runs. The new ones would run, but how well they would run is another question. I have a modern yanmar that I'm going to try out next. As far as cost, in Canada we pay people to get rid of the oil so most gas stations would give it to you for free.
