  • @whytheinternet Assuming you're an American and not an Aussie expat, they are commenting on Aussie politics. How the current PM shafted her predecessor and then almost lost the election 2 months later. Tony is Tony Abbot, leader of the opposition, Rob and Bob are Rob Oakeshott and Bob Katter, two independent MPs who held the balance of power after the election and decided who would be government (and PM). Julio Gillardio is Julia Gillard, the Prime Minister.

Sorry if you knew this already.

  • hahaha! classic. poorly engineered shaft, indeed

  • I love how Julio is wearing a red hard hat. That's subtle.

  • @mcnesta80 Yes, we discussed this 6 months ago, thanks for catching up. Anything from the 1990s we can help you with?

  • @Prod1Kh Tony is Tony Windsor

  • Deep.

  • @Lieu3C4 well that definitely works. Pretty clever indeed.

  • The subtext is to do with the hung Parliament in Australia. The man's name is a pun on Australia's leader's name Julia Gillard and the rescuers from the mine are the politicians who gave her a majority.

  • @HindsightExpert Well, in my defence, the Mad Monk was one of the major horse traders, but, yeah, you're probably right.

  • I thought we had to lower our moral standards (sink a crooked mine shaft), go "to-knee", suck cock (as in "bob") and plunder natural resources (as in "rob") and rue the consequences at our leisure ("andrew"), we being the ones "who Leo" (rules the jungle) and go along swimmingly, well monied, with an attitude (gill-are-dough/hard-owe). But maybe that's just me.

  • @Prod1Kh I think that 'Tony' refers to the independent, Tony Windsor rather than to Tony Abbot. Tony Windsor, as an independent, said that he would support Labor to form a minority government.

  • @hargra123 Not everybody is Australian and lives and breathes Aussie politics, doesn't mean they can't get the humour once they've got the context.

Remember, snopes.com had to do a debunking on The Front Fell Off because foreigners hadn't heard the original story and hadn't ever seen Clarke and Dawe and therefore didn't know what they were watching.
