Tonnes of ivory stockpiles have gone on sale in the first officially sanctioned auction since 1999.

The proceeds of the government sponsored sale will go towards elephant conservation projects.

But many conservationists say it just serves to encourage illegal poachers.

Al Jazeera's Rosie Garthwaite reports.

  • as an conasewer of fine ivory, i'm for the intentional slaughter of elephants; however, i always opt for the option of "de-tusking" them without death first. in many cases though, the elephant will react to strongly to the chemical injections necessary to sedate them, and so we (my poaching agency) have no other choice but to result to other tactics.

if anyone is interested in joining my colleagues and me, or in purchasing fine, antique, polished ivory pieces, please message me.

  • You want to make trophies of the dead, maybe someone make a trophy of you?

  • No ..

  • in southern africa, the number over increased, they are now a threat to human, espeacially in Botswana. only loved by tourist, people who dont live there, who see them by passing. And this ivory were taken from poachers, and elephants which died natural death

  • yes, the murdering of the whales and bears and elephants are HORRIBLE...but what i am superconcerned about are those damn CHEMTRAILS...NOW THOSE are scary for all of us.

  • I still get shivers when I remember that day I saw this huge ivory stockpile-

it is good to know that many now are protecting those awesome animals. Many thanks for posting this!

  • what i would like to know is regardlessly they will continue to sell ivory but is there a way they can continue to get what they want with out being cruel to the animal and so the animal can continue to live

  • shut up.

  • f*ck poachers

  • this report fails to mention how many poachers are shot and wounded every year. and it does not mention how much the elephant population has increased over 15yrs of conservation...is this Filler from Aljazeera?
