This was a presentation given at the April 4th, 2011 Surry County Commissioners meeting. The speaker is Emily Williams, US Department of Housing and Urban Development Operations Specialist with the Office of Field Policy and Management. Surry County is a member of the consortium of communities in the Triad region of NC who are working alongside local regional transit provider PART (Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation) and other Regional Planning Councils, organizations, and municipalities to bring about a "Regional Plan for Sustainable Development" for the Triad region of NC.
So, you may be asking. Just what is Sustainability and why should I care or be concerned about it? I mean don't those guys just want to keep the planet clean?

Sustainability and the Sustainable Development movement is so much more than just a concern about keeping our neighborhoods litter free and our communities clean. Sustainable Development is a political philosophy originally conceived by the United Nations.

As Defined by the United Nations it is:
"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

This philosophy for the first time demands that the sustainable balance of Environment, Economy, and Social Equity be the deciding lens through which all development, growth, and decisions are viewed. All other growth, development, and decisions are seen as "unsustainable". These 3 linked issues are known as the 3E's or "the triple bottom line" a concept that is directly opposed to the traditional bottom line of our American system of capitalism. In a nutshell this is Soviet "Central Planning" with a new environmentally "Green" coat of paint.
