I never should have let this old road carry me,
So far down I can't come back.
I was born a wanton young child,
In a rundown, tarpaper shack.

My Mama left me to a drunkards dreams,
And a life that she just couldn't hack.
She sealed my fate with her parting kiss,
To a life doomed to fall through the cracks.

I should have known, that I was born to roam,
Down a road where there's no turning back.
My life to me, hell, it aint no mystery,
When all your songs turn black!

I thought it best that I headed out west,
With the Holy Ghost on my back.
Me an' the ghost, well we took off down the coast
On a ribbon of old railroad track.

We chose to go, on down to Mexico,
With my world in a green garbage sack.
Our friendship did fall, when the sack got too small
And all of my songs turned black!

I met Angelina, in the Black Dog cantina.
Gold tequila was her favoured drink.
I'd never been in a place of so much sin,
Where you act before you think.

We took a room, in the back of the saloon,
And all too soon our passion ran high.
She poured out her love- thick as the storm clouds above.
When suddenly I heard her cry!

Her boyfriend bust in, with a sad, sickly grin.
And I caught the knifeblade in a flash.
I pushed him back, and I heard my pistol crack...
Angelina, stood there all aghast!

I can honestly say, I'm not sorry today,
And thats just a natural fact.
But whats to become, of a man on the run,
...May hang on a lawmans rifle rack.

This road I been down, been so hard and so long,
And I'm dealin' off a mighty shortened stack.
Now I ramble alone, with no hearth and no home.
And all of my songs turn black.

I love this tune. i heard this Reg song alot. cant hear it loud enough on my big headfones. i am a bit scared to comment, because i not really knowed Reg.i just know him from my brother Rocket. i cant get this song out of my head. played it the hole day on the guitar. thanks Reg for this beautiful song.
