@deejayantz= They did overdo it on the last one.. They are called helpers. They're for really long trains, so long that one locomotive can't handle them all alone. So they all work together to move it.

@deejayantz out west, there are a lot of heavy grades that the train must cross. and what k5lta said as well

just to keep the preformance up or a power move or just in case one breakdown,there are alot of different reasons.

why in the USA they use so many engines on trains? even the last one has two and only a couple of cars

They do it to free up space on the Emporia Sub since the line West of Emporia is single track.
