A man accused of participating in a riot against land grabs in southern China has died in police custody. The death could spark further unrest in Guangdong Province and Chinese authorities have dispatched police to stop any possible protests.

A man accused of participating in protests in southern China, Xue Jinbo, has died in custody. Xue allegedly was in the riot on September 21st, when residents in Wukang village smashed up a police station and other government buildings. They were protesting forced land seizures by local authorities.

According to a statement by the Shanwei City government in Guangdong Province, Xue was rushed to the hospital after feeling ill on the third day of detention. He later died of what they say was cardiac failure.

Villagers say Xue's appearance after he died was too horrible to look at, suggesting he had been beaten in custody.

[Mr. Cai, Wukan Villager]:
"His face was deformed and his body was scarred all over. Right now the government will not allow the corpse to be taken back to the village. They fear this being exposed to the public. They don't allow photos either. They won't even allow you to take a cell phone in to see (his body)."

Xue was arrested on December 9th with several other protesters.

[Mr. Cai, Wukan Villager]:
"They didn't show any ID, they were all plainclothes police. They didn't even arrive in police cars. Forty people rushed in, they were arrested. The one who was beaten to death was the temporary representative."

On December 11th over 1000 riot police entered the village before daybreak, villagers faced them in broad daylight. The police carried tear gas and water cannons to deal with any protests. The village is currently under lockdown by police.

NTD tried to contact local authorities about the issue but got no response.

  • @DoktorHauss The difference between the US and China is that the US has the First Amendment: the freedom of press. While the US is not perfect and has many problems, the US is still a far superior country to China.

  • @ktchong So what?!? Chinese police said none killed in China protests too.

  • @DoktorHauss You conveniently left out the important details: "Police said preliminary investigations show a 35-year-old military veteran fatally shot himself in the head Thursday at an Occupy Wall Street encampment in Vermont’s largest city." -- it is a suicide.

    Who's the ignorant one here?

  • @ktchong @Anonymous52550 Nonsense. How much ignorant bunch of people are you.

Veteran killed at Occupy Vermont camp

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A hospital spokesman says the 35-year-old military veteran who was shot at an Occupy Wall Street encampment in Vermont's largest city has died.

Mike Noble of the Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital in Burlington confirmed Thursday that a man died after the shooting in City Hall Park.

  • Whoa boys. Everyday somewhere here or abroad, United States military, CIA, police officers, prison keepers and contractors are killing or torturing somebody somewhere. I was merely pointing at ourselves since I feel for the loss of some moral standards that I thought we once tried to set. That's all. Believe me, I understand that it is as bad or worse elsewhere around the globe. No one should be murdered while in custody anywhere, but it has always happened and it likely will. Take care.

  • @Kallister18 US police has arrested many Occupy protestors and injured one. But no one has been killed so far.

  • @Kallister18 What are you talking about? No one is being killed in the US.

  • We kill many of our protesters in the United States as well. There is a global revolution happening!

May we, the people, stand tall and stand together.
