I've seen this come and go on YouTube, and that's probably a bad sign. So, I hope I'm not doing something wrong, because that's NOT my intention. This recording is ©1980 A&M Records, Inc. I was lucky to score this single at a used record store in San Diego about 12 years ago. I wish they had issued this and the Spanish versions on the "complete" recordings box set, as well as the '86 version.

  • I have this on a 45... this is on one side in Japanese and the flip side of the same song in Spanish. I remember buying it at Tower Records for a $1.00 as I was a hge Police fan.

I would've liked to have found that version of it that you have. Mine has "Behind My Camel" as the B-side. I've since managed to run across a decent encode of the Spanish version; not lossless, but decent.

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • 爆笑!(big laugh)

  • I bought this song on a 45 back in 1981 while in Tokyo. I know the lyrics better in Japanese, than English. Brings back great memories.

  • great!!!!

    u r god!!!

  • 小学生の頃、掃除の時間にほうきをギターにして歌ってた。

  • Wow! Thank you, Tachikaze. That seems a lot more in line with the english lyrics than with the spanish version. Maybe Sting figured: "spanish is too romantic for such deep thinking." (That is, assuming he wrote these translations himself.)

  • (cont'd) "de do do do de da da da" -ha ai-no-kotoba-sa -- words of love (you know) "de do do do de da da da" -de wakatte kure-yo -- through this gives understanding toki-ni-ha dare-demo -- sometimes everyone kotoba-ni ??? -kedo -- get ??? by words however munashiimono-de-yo -- nothing but empty words kokoro-ga mienai -- the heart can't see te-hanarete kotoba-you-ni -- just like thrown-away words shinjitsu-ga hoshii-kara -- because truth is wanted (chorus) (repeat chorus)
  • @superAJ71 translation: kotoba-da-to -- words as such uso-ni naru -- become lies kuchi-ni noseta soko-ni -- placed on my mouth there kotaba-ha ore-wo shibaru -- words bind me hadaka-no-ore-dake-wo -- only my naked self uke-tomete hoshii-kara -- want to be understood because "de do do do de da da da" -ha ore-no-kotoba-sa -- are my words (you know) "de do do do de da da da" -ha shinjite-wo kure -- please believe
  • So, more or less, what do the Japanese lyrics convey? In the Spanish version, the lyrics are more trivial; in the refrains, the alternating lyrics say: "I tell you with sincerity, I repeat with honesty, I search for you with crazy anxiety, I love you with velocity."

  • @superAJ71

flowerinthehouse1 is saying it's cute how sting sings kotoba-wa ore-wo shibaru.

This is a great find. Much thanks. Perfect for singing karaoke in Japan, if I can remember the Japanese lyrics.
