This is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, a far more remote and -to us at least- beautiful canyon than even the Grand Canyon. From our position on the south rim it is 2,200 feet straight down to the river. See that jungle of trees down by the river? Those are not trees... that is Poison Ivy. Yeah... Sick.
The only way into the canyon is by rappel and the only way out is the climb. While we had a full rack of gear (cams, chocks, nuts, etc) we decided against going in and settled for appreciating the incredible view and serene atmosphere from the rim.
