Yelena mukihna was a LEGEND! She did a full- twisting double back in floor exercise! A skill that is done by the olympic medalist Sandra Izbasa in 2008!
Natalia Shaposnikova did a triple twist in floor exercise. Maria Filatova did a double tuck dismount from beam. These skills are stille done by many gymnast nowadays! Give these gymnast the resect they deserve. They were elegant and graceful. You can't say that about Shanw Johnson! ( Sorry fo my bad English)

@Muffinsmaster very very very scary how ignorant you are of the evoluation of gymnastics. Every single year the skills get harder for the sport but that doesnt take away from past accomplishments. She's a World AA Champ. The training techniques and equipment were much less back then, and she still managed to do some of the hardest tricks. If she trained today, she would be right up there with Shawn and Nastia, but she competed in 1977-78 before I was even born. Educate yourself

@Muffinsmaster I just wanted to add, that what you have said is the same as saying that Einstein wasn't a genius, since nowadays every high-school student knows how to use the theory of relativity...

she was an elite gymnast because she won 5 medals in the 77 european championships, 3 of which were gold. She also won the 78 world championships beating out the olympic champions Nadia Comaneci and Nellie Kim who were concidered the best female gymnasts in the world at that time.
Some of the moves Elena performed in her routines, such as floor/bar/beam excercizes are now banned, because they are concidered too dangerous. She was ahead of her time, and paved the way for todays gymnasts.

I don't really understand why they could call her an "elite gymnast." She was certainly very talented, but there is no comparison between Elena and Shawn, or Nastia. Very graceful though. She would probibly be considered and level 8 or 9 now a'days.
Come on think before you comment...
This was back in 1977 and Shawn's era is in the 21st century! Nobody from that time is actually going to be able to match the gymnasts of today. In Elena's time she was considered one of the best gymnasts in the world especially when she beat Nadia Comaneci (who was thought to be a legend) at the the worlds in 1978. Shawn and all the other gymnasts of today should be thanking her. She took gymnastics to another level. She deserves much more respect...

You have got to be kidding me. This was 32 years ago! Gymnasts like Nastia and Shawn owe their entire careers to gymnasts like Mukhina. She was one of the great innovators of the sport, following Korbut and Comaneci. Sports evolve, but it is incredibly insulting for you to compare Mukhina (a genius in her day) to level 8/9er's of today.
