alchemy would actually be the science of transforming atoms into different atoms ..

and ofcourse ppl wanted to make iron into GOLD

wich is possible ..if u could only add the correct number of protons, neutrons and electrons to iron ..

i think it would be easier to make led into gold ..since led is right before gold :D wich means its atomic number is smaller by 1 ..that means add 1 proton and electron ..and i think 1 neutron ..and u get gold

althow practically we dont know how to do that
