Do you say LGBT or GLBT or queer or something different?

Here's the thing: In my blogs and videos, I almost always say LGBT, standing for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. But pretty much everytime I say it, i get emails from people that are so upset that as a gay man, I didn't put the "G" first.

To be honest, the reason I do it is because lesbians really face a double whammy of discrimination - first for being a woman, and secondly for being gay.

So I put the "L" first in the acronym to recognize that.

But really, if you think about it - transgender individuals probably face the most discrimination - and then most people don't even think bisexuality even exists.

So maybe it should be TBLG? And then there's queer, but a whole bunch of people really don't like that.

And maybe you're thinking, "What the big deal?" And sure there are plenty of other issues that deserve our time and attention, but it is something that matters to a lot of people and is certainly worthy of discussion.

So - what do you say? GLBT? LBGT? LGBTUVWXYZ? And why do you say it?

  • I say 'HBT'-people. I really do not find any good reason as to why we choose to split the homosexuals into two different groups based on gender, when homosexuality only has to do with loving one of the same sex. Let homosexuals be homosexuals, not lesbians and gays.

  • I had always understood Q to mean "questioning."

  • I don't even pay attention to what he says. I just stare at his body the whole time

  • there are like 20 sexual identities, the only way to sum it up rilly is to say queer. i know its sort of not a great word 4 every one, but if we say LGBT, we are missing somany idententities!

  • LG= ladies and gentleman

    LG - lesbien gay :DDD

    so LGBT!!

  • I am a lesbian and every single one of my guy friends are gay. I love lesbians and gays!

  • i go with GLBTQI and threason i put the g before the l is the simple fact the most of the people i grow up with said "GLBT" so i did that way. and now people in world have added a Q-(to me meaning) question and an i - innersex. so i think to me its all the same but how you were/are raise what comes first and what they stand for.

  • yes we transsexuals face more discrimination then any of the 3 and some of the gay groups are sadly throwing us outside the box....we have discrimination from straight people and we hav discrimination from some GAY PEOPLE as well......im happy i subscribed to u...u should be the leader of our community for u seems to know more....not those people like dan savage who throw us under the bus and keeps throwing slur words on transsexuals calling them freaky tranny and calling our lovers weirdo

  • I say LGBT because it flows, that's how I was taught to say it, and since it's the most common, everyone seems to know it.

  • i say LGBT but I'm bisexual just seems easier to say it that way i guess
