Today (March 11, 2009) I was driving east on Route 286 (from Saltsburg toward Indiana, PA) when I passed directly under a bald eagle perched on a branch which was about 30-35 feet above the roadway. This was exactly 2.7 miles east of Saltsburg, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The eagle on the tree brach oiver Route 286 was just past the intersection with the road to Nowrytown (the intersection where the old, red shack/fruitstand is located). THis is Elders Ridge Road although no street sign is present at the intersection. Interestingly, this is just a few miles from where the Thunder Mountian Lenape hold their Pow Wows. This is about 15 miles "west" of IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania).

I observed eagle from 2:32 PM to 4:07 PM which is one hour and 35 minutes. When I left at 4:07 PM the eagle was still there. While there, I flagged down about ten cars driving down Elders Ridge Road to the intersection at Route 286.

The camera was a Canon Powershot S3 IS; the video was taken at 12x zoom. I was perhaps 40 yeards from the eagle. I stayed pretty far back so I wouldn't cause it to fly away. The video setting on the camera was accidentally set at the wrong (lower) resolution.

The eagle was perched in two different trees. This video (video 1 of 5) shows the eagle at its first perch. This is where the eagle was when I first arrived. Amazingly, many cars were driving both directions at 55 mph under the eagle, but the still remained here on the branch abpve the roadway.

  • HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice find my friend. you must really have a good eye. I have been trying to find one myself. I have spent most of my life hunting down one if these fellows here. Very rare creature at that. Possibly the biggest challenge I have had since learning to speak braille. Thanks for the wonderful footage of such an excellent creature.

  • yup, they are making a comback. Theres even talk about them being taken off the endangered species list in a few years. Ive seen 4 (probally the same one) in slickville. I even got to see it attack a duck, the duck dove in the water to escape.

  • Cool Video... I never realized there were Eagles this close to Indiana Pa. Thank you for sharing this video clip.
