Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat (1976)

Nel 1976 il folk rock trovò un nuovo eroe, era Al Stewart che in quell' anno pubblicò la canzone di questo video "Year of the Cat", una canzone che lo fece uscire dal circuito dei folk clubs dove era rimasto relegato fino ad allora e decretò il suo successo di massa. Ispirato da Bob Dylan e da Paul Simon che per qualche anno fu suo vicino di appartamento a Soho, iniziò la sua carriera come menestrello di canzoni intimiste e romantiche con l'album "Bedsitter Images" del 1967 che conteneva pezzi notevoli come "Swiss Cottage Manoeuvers" e "Clifton in the Rain".
Nel 1968 pubblicò "Love Chronicles" che venne votato come miglior album folk dell'anno, in esso parteciparono i Fairport Convention come band di supporto e il chitarrista dei Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page, l'album conteneva anche la omonima canzone, 18 minuti di epica autobiografia che costituirono il suo capolavoro. Con questi due album si era già fatto un nome, egli cominciò ad essere apprezzato nel circuito dei college e dei folk clubs dove iniziò ad esibirsi al fianco di altri artisti del calibro di Sandy Denny, Roy Harper e dei Fairport Convention.
L'album "Zero She Flies" del 1970 fu nell'insieme di canzoni , ancora più convincente, grazie alla elettrica "Electric Los Angeles Sunset", la profonda "Small Fruit Song" e la narrazione storica di "Manuscript".
"Orange" del 1972 fu il punto di arrivo della sua fase romantica dopodichè vennero pubblicati nel 1974 "Past Present and Future" e nel 1975 "Modern Times", due album dove Al Stewart cominciò ad esplicitare la sua vera passione, quella per la storia.
Il suo successo stava crescendo ma fino al 1976 tranne qualche picco di popolarità egli era rimasto soprattutto un artista di culto, la riscossa avvenne appunto con "The Year of the Cat" che ottenne un successo planetario e divenne un classico sempreverde, la canzone era contenuta nell' album omonimo del 1976.
Gli album successivi furono: "Time Passages" del 1978 e "24 Carrots" del 1980 in cui ritornò all' ossessione per i temi storici, "Russians and Americans" del 1984 che trattava di politica contemporanea, "Last Days of the Century" del 1988 ispirato dalla fantascienza e infine "Famous Last Words" del 1993 e "Between the Wars" del 1995 che furono due raccolte di odi personali e storiche.

I saw him live with the then-new love of my life at the Universal Ampitheater(before it had a roof)on August 9, 1977. Security told me, "TWO photos, and that's it." The photos are long gone, but the memory is lifelong. A totally unique genre of music(I've BEEN to the "blue-tiled walls near the market stalls") with one of the greatest women who ever lived. ;])

I think that this is just one of those songs that is just a pleasure to listen to. It's just so well crafted and arranged, and Al Stewart's voice is just so great to listen to.

I think that's why this song is still a favorite of mine after all these years.
