but seriously, stoicism sounds a lot like Christianity. is Christianity just a stoicistic religion?

  • @skimmertakesall Big difference between Christianity and Stoics: Stoics have no concept of God or an afterlife.

The Christian moral framework and overarching philosophies are heavily borrowed from many different sources, stoicism being one of those sources.

  • @themefund How is it borrowed if it's from the Bible?

  • @riverofsticks The Bible wasn't the first document ever written...

  • @riverofsticks I don't want to take over the conversation but recommend you read what I consider fascinating, humorous, & well-researched book Sex at Dawn, which while about sex in some regards also discusses religion via evolutionary sociology/archeology/other sciences (ex-how we went from hunter-gatherer tribes with VERY open sexual relationships overall to agriculture-driven,patriarchal baby factory villages which led to overpopulation&is thought to be why we created religions that okay war).

  • I'm very into stoicism and Vonnegut, and I agree with you that he's fairly stoic in his outlook, but in a limited form. He has the stoic emotional detachment from life's heavier topics, like war, but he's far more pessimistic than an actual stoic--most people do not realize at the heart of stoicism is actually optimism (from pessimism comes learned optimism). Lovely to hear somebody mention both of these topics!

  • Hmm. (That's what I say when I'm interested in what the other person is saying but don't really have anything to say in response.)

  • @themefund What documents have the borrowed material?

  • Not really knowing anything about Kurt Vonnegut myself, I was just wondering if he actually used the word "weak" in his description of his characters. If so, wouldn't that mean he saw it as something bad, and thus be against stoicism?

  • I love your videos. and i have no clue how or where i found you channel.

  • .... hun?
