  • This is THE most chilling sound I've ever heard. RIP Mr. Helms...give em our best.

  • Don was a friend of mine and when I played a steel guitar show in Nashville in 2006, I saw the Gibson Console Grande up close. Don showed it to me and explained everything about it to me. It was awesome seein' the guitar up close.

  • Well don Don, you played it as well as you always did, great sound, you showed me so much, thanks for playing and signing my Gibson Console Grande for me.

  • Don was a close friend of my uncle, Lynn Owsley a former Texas Troubadour. I first met don and Miss Hazel in Montgomery, Al at dons birthday party. He had it at the Hank Williams Museum. I went to Nashville last year and me and my uncle rode over to see Miss hazel. She was doing great to be her age, she showed me some of dons awards and old pictures of don, hank ,and the drifting cowboys.

  • Don and Miss Hazel were good friends to me and my wife,my wife and I would fly from England and I would play lead guitar with Don several times at the"Old Tyme Country Show"in Eunice Louisiana.

He dedicated his instrumental Cold Cold Heart to me for my birthday,I was also the minder to "Ole red" his steel guitar and set it up ready for him to play, this guitar was pure history. On news of his death we flew to Nashville for his funeral, "Ole red" was there by his side,,,,,, I sadly miss him!!

  • He looks visibly moved at the end... he looks sad. I wonder why...

  • Don Helms had a good deal of 'nighttime' in his playing,,even on those jaunty happy tunes, there was that meloncholy creeping in, just like Hank's singing, which makes the joy that much richer, more profound...I got into steel guitar because of this man and that was an excellent piece, thanks for posting!

  • This is soooooooooooo beautiful!

  • Don did NOT use his Gibson Console Grand Steel Guitar on ALL of Hank's records. On the earlier Hank recordings, Don told me that he used a Fender Double 8 String which he used to trade toward the Gibson in about 1949. Remember the Health and Happiness shows? It was the Fender steel on those recordings - Don told me himself!
