Images of Women in the Media

Who decides what is beautiful and what isn't? Where do you get your ideas on what it means to be female?

The media mainly portrays women using two contrasting images- the sex symbol and the homemaker. These images are often unattainable to girls and women and exposure to them can lead to health and self-esteem problems. The message of this video is that women don't have to white, thin, or look a certain way to be beautiful. Let your true colours shine through.

This is a crock. The only people who portray women are themselves. It is the women who choose the way they are portrayed. So when you blame this on a sexist society, it shows that you think women can't choose for themselves, which is insulting. Maybe if a woman is portrayed as a slut on television, it's because she is comfortable with her sexuality. And maybe, that's her personal choice to do so.

i've never been all that paranoid about the media or photoshopped images in magazines, but i have noticed shit getting a bit twisted. if i ever become a mum, my daughter watching Bratz or owning a Bratz doll isn't even going to be an option.
