Generally, I check the links to see what kind of SEO help they will give for rankings. The PR on the domain's homepage alone can't tell you how well it will rank, but if you have a lot of inbound links to it from a variety of good sites (and hopefully to internal pages too), you stand a better chance of doing well in the search engines.
It's up to you and how much checking you want to do. Obviously, a good way to cut down the number of sites you investigate is to raise the PR level below which you just ignore a domain. Then there are fewer to check.
are you checking these links just to see what type of person might find his/her way to the site if you buy it?

Nice video. Is the PR checking bit really necessary though, if the domain gets good traffic anyway?
