Writer in Residence: 'Walk Down New Walk' by Jean 'Binta' Breeze

'Walk Down New Walk' is part of a collection of Write Here poetry by Leicester based poet and international artist, Jean 'Binta' Breeze.

New Walk in Leicester is a Late 18th Century urban public walk, extending for 1,100 metres, developed in the 19th Century with residences and public buildings including New Walk Museum & Art Gallery.

Originally known as Queen's Walk, New Walk was laid out in 1785 by Leicester Corporation as a pedestrian way (which it still is), connecting the town from the area of Welford Place with the racecourse (now Victoria Park).

This collection has been inspired by, and written during, Jean's residency at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, as part of Writing East Midlands' writers in residence programme, Write Here.

Jean has been exploring the life and stories of the museum inspiring people to engage with and write poetry about the exhibitions. Through the power of poetry she has been bringing new life to objects !nd stepping back in time from Ancient Egypt through to more modern times, and visiting the life and work of the Godfather of Ska, Laurel Aitken.
