Reelblack TV's Chivonnie caught up with filmmaker Laura Waters Hinson at the AFI Silverdocs Film Festival to discuss her Student Academy Award-winning film, AS WE FORGIVE. Hinson was an attendee at the fest. Her hour-long feature, narrated by Mia Farrow deals with the Reconciliation Project in Rwanda, where tens of thousands of confessed killers are being sent back to their villages due to prison overcrowding. The only solution is for their neighbors to forgive their evil deeds. To find out more about this film, to schedule a screening or purchase a DVD, please visit www.asweforgivethose.com
Mainstream media---in America---doesn't seem interested in Africa: When, as an American, I lived in Europe for four years, I was struck immediately with how conscientious the Europeans are (about Africa) compared to most U.S. citizens. One of my cousins has been deeply involved in Liberia and Uganda for years and I really admire her: It's been dangerous and frustrating work for her, but she genuinely cares. This *is* a marvellous Film, hopefully it'll air on PBS soon so more can see it

I am so impressed with the concern that this filmmaker has for displaying a complex, raw picture of what is occurring in Rwanda. Really hope more can see this film!

Great to see someone interested in presenting African people as real, complicated, and even instructive to the world--not just a story of Rwandans' incredibly challenging situation but of Rwandans showing an inspirational amount of courage and kindness to one another.
