Mardi Gras day is the culmination of the 2 week span of festivities.
Thousands gather in the French Quarter featuring some of the most colorful, creative costumes and personalities. Clashing with this vibrant display are the megaphone voices determined to save all of the revelers from their own immorality. Footage from St Charles Ave early in the morning, then down to Canal, Bourbon, Frenchmen, Royal then eventually back down St Charles Ave at the end of the day for the ceremonious cleaning of the entire parade route by Orleans Parish Prisoners, signaling the official end to the parade season.
Shot entirely with a Canon 5DMKII on a Manfrotto 560b monopod with a Zacuto Z-finder.
Lenses used:
Canon 24-70mm 2.8L
Canon 70-200mm 2.8L
Canon 50mm 1.8
Music by DJ Shadow and Amon Tobin.

  • hi, nice shots, i found your vid searching about using monopod's for video, i have a cheap tripod and i am looking about buying a better one because this is really bad for tilt and pan, but in the search i found your amazing vid using a monopod and now i need to ask: do you feel satisfied using a monopod instead a tripod? (i know are different things, but can you tell me about how you feel about it?) for reference this are my "work" youtube(dot)com / watch?v=gl7Eain-AI4 thanks

  • @vamp999 Thanks for your compliment. I use both monopods and tripods in different situations. If you're going to be doing a lot of walking around and need to get shots quickly then a monopod is more than enough. If you're going to be filming a lot of shots of long duration then a tripod would be better for your needs.

After I viewed your work I think you should probably stick with a tripod so you can get those long, steady shots.

  • Great work! How did you create the slow motion sequences?

  • @amoergosum3 I slowed them down using the plugin "Twixtor"

  • wow.. look at all that garbage... how destructive people can be

  • Great looking images! Fun Video.

  • Great job. I wouldn't change a thing.

  • I came here cause I was researching the monopod as well. Great work! This is a really entertaining video. The scene with the old ladies in the window is so perfect!

  • @joezeppi thanks a lot for your reply, yes you have right my shots are slow and long shots in most cases like another watch?v=fMwdM5iFUyA (this was shot in a compact minidv), i will go for a better tripod and maybe in a future with some time, money or diy i can go for a monopod to experiment with new situations, anyway first i need to improve (a lot) my composition, color, etc. thanks again for your time.

  • Only 2 comments..?Maybe You should have tagged it with more, as this is great stuff..

Anyways it was very well shot.

Starts to get into the full swing around at the 1 min mark.

Especially liked the aftermath and the chain gain with their rakes ..

    50 1.8 mm I could pick.

At 1.33 would have been also a great still shot ..

Steadicam maybe would of given you more, but Excellent regardless..
