In a TCM interview, the legendary film director Terry Gilliam reveals his opinion on Schindler's List and Spielberg and mainstream Hollywood in general, saying things that most filmmakers, critics and viewers are too scared to express.

He also mentions Stanley Kubrick, compares Kubrick and Spielberg and praises the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey for its thought-provoking ambiguity.

What has Jerry Tilliam ever done? I think his off-the-cuff remarks about Schindlers List were waaaay off-the-cuff. That film left me with a number of questions, for instance: aren't Jewish people supposed to be funny? and when was this made why is it in black and white? and also where are all the black people? and couldn't this have been shorter? and why does everybody speak english? and wasn't matt damon supposed to be in this? which one is the good guy? and do u like war films? and fuck the SS

"Schindler's list was about saving a few people"

Oskar Schindler saved around 1,200 people. Of course, compared to the 6 million who perished, that is miniscule. But let us not forget the few people who were beacons of light in a time of unfathomable darkness. Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire. The value of even one life is what Schindler's List illuminated and that is why I don't agree with this gentleman.

I didnt think Gilliam would be bitching about such dumb things. If you want to know about the whole Holocaust then watch a documentary about it, which Spielberg has contributed to many. They also dont make nearly as much money than what a Gilliam film would make.

Well said, but I'll add a third dimension to the issue: Kubrick made symbolistic movies about what he perceived as a universal reality. He didn't pick any sides.Spielberg however, ALWAYS picks a side, and he picks the one that relates to the lowest emotional denominator and to the acceptable view of a subject BUT a director like Oliver Stone,at least in his best earlier movies, though he is clearly picking a side,he picks the complicated side of truth,of course the truth as he sees it,but REAL.

He wants a filmed that's based on real events to leave him with questions? Does he know what history means? What a fucking clown.

Gilliam has not made a decent film for a long-ass time. Any good will he had in the past 18 years since 12 Monkeys was completely lost because of Tideland (seriously, did ANYONE remotely like that movie?). Fuck Terry Gilliam and his elitist attitude.

By the way, another great thing about Schindler's List is that it correctly depicts what Fascism is: a system with the appearance of private property, but where the state has final disposition. Notice how they keep calling Oscar Schindler a "businessman", but every time he wants to do something, he has to go to Nazi officials to get their consent. A real businessman (in a democracy / constitutional republic) operates by right, not permission.
