Billy Joel - Goodnight Saigon

Lyrics:

We met as soul mates
On Parris Island
We left as inmates
From an asylum
And we were sharp
As sharp as knives
And we were so gung ho
To lay down our lives
We came in spastic
Like tameless horses
We left in plastic
As numbered corpses
And we learned fast
To travel light
Our arms were heavy
But our bellies were tight
We had no home front
We had no soft soap
They sent us Playboy
They gave us Bob Hope
We dug in deep
And shot on sight
And prayed to Jesus Christ
With all our might
We had no cameras
To shoot the landscape
We passed the hash pipe
And played our Doors tapes
And it was dark
So dark at night
And we held on to each other
Like brother to brother
We promised our mothers we'd write
And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Remember Charlie
Remember Baker
They left their childhood
On every acre
And who was wrong?
And who was right?
It didn't matter in the thick of the fight
We held the day
In the palm
Of our hand
They ruled the night
And the night
Seemed to last as long as six weeks
On Parris Island
We held the coastline
They held the highlands
And they were sharp
As sharp as knives
They heard the hum of our motors
They counted the rotors
And waited for us to arrive
And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down together

  • War does not determine who is right...only who is left, but that certainly doesn't mean that those who die in battle didn't die honourably. To die selflessly for ones country is to die with honour, to die with your head held high and your arm in a final salute. To fight for freedom, for what you believe in, for your nation, for your ruler, for your people, as brothers...as friends...as soldiers. What makes a great era, is not a great leader...but a great people...

  • This played today at our school ceremony :)

God bless all the soldiers that died in war

It's too bad that you're right. Unfortunately, I'm a little sorry to have to say that I'm part of this up and coming generation. I don't know where these sentiments have come from, and why schools can't teach proper American history, but I certainly hope there will be a U.S. of A. around for my children to enjoy.

  • @jake0allen,

Nothing has changed. There was the "Gulf War Syndrome" after the Agent Orange disgrace, not too mention how the American Sheeple have sat back while the US Constitution is used as toilet paper with the Patriot Act, Military Comissions Act, the recent NDAA and soon the Enemey Repatriation Act. Americans truly don't give a shit about what their country was meant to be, all they care about is a fantasy where all is well while in reality all is burning around them.

  • This is a beautiful, poignant, tear jerking account of the Vietnam War. What really makes me sad when I watch this is the way soldiers were treated when they returned home, after having risked their lives in an apparently pointless war, and having seen friends die around them. How did people justify that?

  • @007slaney Wonderfully said

  • @007slaney No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

  • Only if you believe in all those and not in the rights you gfave up to do so

  • @dennisjuh1993 voor het goede tegen het kwaade nee grapje ik vecht voor de burgers in iran maar geloof me dat is niet simpel

  • It brought me right back, made me cry in rememberance.
