On a felluca on the Nile. I can't remember this guy's name, but apparently he is famous in Egypt for protest songs. He was amazing (despite the apathy of his entourage).

Recorded on October 16, 2008 using a Flip Video camcorder.

  • to markmauds, i'm probably spelling it wrong, but it's called a simsemiya from the Ismailayan part of Egypt. it's possible the instrument is used in other parts of the middle east too. at least from what i know anyway! hope it helps...

  • thanks!

  • Is he playing a Lyre of some sort? it looks like he's used a big pan to amplify the strings!

  • not sure what it's called, but he made it himself.

  • i was mainly referring to the one guy on the right who's barely clapping and doesn't seem that into it. unfortunately i can't remember what our guide said his songs were protesting, but apparently at one point he was jailed because of them.
