I heard this since 44 years ago at less as Iabant Iskandaria ... maybe the origin is uncertain, a legacy of all that ethnics folk music mixed during Ottoman Empire.
Nice version.

Hi! I'm from Bulgaria and we also have a verision of this song (very old one btw). I've heard it also in Serbian, Kosovo version, Macedonian, Albanian, Lebanon.. The Greek version as well. Turkish and Albanians use it also as a marching war song (quite freaky)!!!

This song is much more older than the movie "Katip".But original song is a little bit different than this one and i think the original one is better.
