Here is a video of a Lionel MPC Southern Pacific F3 ABA. These were made by Lionel in 1982. Both A units were sold as a set and the B unit sold separately. It appeared in the 1982 Fall Collector Center catalog. The B unit was made in very limited quantities and putting together an ABA set was very difficult back when these were released.

The passenger cars were also sold separately. 5 cars were initially released in 1982. The diner appeared in the 1982 Fall Collector Center catalog and the vista dome appeared in the 1983 Fall Collector Center catalog. And a full vista dome was released in 1990. Along with the B unit, both the diner and vista dome were made in much smaller quantities then the rest of the set and were very difficult to get.

Thanks!! Growing up in the 70's and 80's, the MPC era to me is what the postwar era is to a person who grew up in the 50's. It really was a magical time for me. If you would like to know more about the MPC ear I highly recommend "Lionel, A collector's guide and history, volume 4" written by McComas and Touhy. There is a lot of info in there on how the MPC/Lionel deal came together and the trains made during that time.

  • @rj2571 the 80s would have been my beginnng of lionel train god know how many i would have had today but my dad was too cheap and gave me tyco HO trains but i still had alot of fun with them but yes i do have some of TMs videos and some prive guide books for prewar and postwar lionel but i dont have any mpc i would like to know more about that era i will get a copy of the book or the video if there is one god bless you collector like you is what keeps this hobby of ours alive

Thanks for the kind words. The interaction with other collectors, whether it be online like this or at a train show/meet or whatever is a great part of this hobby. It really makes this a special and very enjoyable hobby.

  • I love that F unit!

It really is a great paint scheme. Kind of makes me want to get Legacy PA-1's Lionel came out with.

Thanks Bill. This is one of the nicest sets ever made by Lionel and is one of my favorites. After running this it makes me want to get a Legacy Daylight. Sure wish we would see more manufacturing in America. Weaver can do it with most of their rolling stock. Makes me wonder why other companies can't.

  • Super sweet set!!!!! This set is not only vintage but back then Lionel still manufactured its trains in the USA! Thanks for sharing and have a great one!
