Use the preterit when narrating a sequence of events, actions, and conditions seen as completed in the past. Such a sequence of actions denotes a forward movement of narrative time.

The verbs decir, traer, and all verbs ending in -ducir (e.g., producir) have a j in the stem and use the ending -eron instead of -ieron in the ustedes/ellos/ellas form. Decir also has an i in the stem. Decir - dije, dijiste, dijo, dijimos, dijisteis, dijeron. Producir - produje, produjiste, produjo, produjimos, produjisteis, produjeron. Traer - traje, trajiste, trajo, trajimos, trajisteis, trajeron.

Remember that the preteri form of hay is hubo (there was, there were) and that it is invariable: Hubo un terremoto terrible. Hubo muchos mertos y heridos.

Irregular Verbs: Stem-changing -ir verbs: Stem-changing -ir verbs change e --> i and o --> u in the usted, él, ella and ustedes ellos, ellas forms in the preterit. pedir --> pidió, pidieron; sentir --> sintió, sintieron. dormir --> durmió, durmieron. morir --> murió, murieron. The verb dar uses the endings of -er and -ir verbs. dar: di, diste, dio, dimos, disteis, dieron. The berbs ir and ser have identical forms in the preterit. (ir/ser -- fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron)
