2011 Lincoln Medal Recipient: JULIE ANDREWS
First Lady of the Musical Theater
Legendary British actress and vocalist Julie Andrews made her Broadway debut at age 18. Her crystalline singing voice, natural elegance and sly humor soon landed her leading roles in the original stage productions of "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot." After winning a Best Actress Oscar for "Mary Poppins," Andrews was cast as Maria in The "Sound of Music," one of the most popular films of all time. Andrews has been honored with five Golden Globe Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, among others. An accomplished children's author, she penned the popular "Dumpy the Dumptruck" series and "The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles." In recognition of her service to charities including the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UNIFEM) and Save the Children, Andrews was named a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 2000.

  • Dame Julie: What a gorgeous, elegant, fun, witty, brilliant, charming woman. She's way beyond talented! And of course, her charisma is truly a gift of joy, sweetness and beauty to this world. Thank you for the many gifts of your multiple talents, the gold of your voice and the gold of your heart!

  • What no comments? Ok, here's one. Julie is a genius in everything she puts her heart and mind too. Acting, writing, and now taking an interest in making sure the legacy of good acting is carried on through our youth and children. I for one, am happy to say I intend to help her carry that tradition on. In fact, I was just accepted into a play that will put on 3 shows within 2 days, in 3 local Michigan cities. I hope God allows me to continue to co-advocate with Julie and other truly talented ppl.
