The story wasn't completed yet. The manga (which the anime is based on) continued for about 4 more years after the anime finished airing.

i love this cartoons, coz it at least shows that if the japs have another chance they will do it for peace not war. War kills lots of good people and the world now needs good people around not shithead who only knows how to talk and bully

@merangkillbots You won't like how the manga ends. Sadly Mirai doesn't survive the war. The USN hunts her down (much like the Bismark) and pounds her into dust. Some of the crew like CIC, XO, and the medic survive and live out their days in history.
