What people should remember is that when you get into a fight you are not going to perform one of your "katas / forms" because people don't attack in the manner they are arranged. These forms and sets of moves are used as a means of preserving the use of the moves and teaching the flexibility of them. If you learn 1 form you have just picked up at least 3-5 stances, and 5-10 blocks and strikes.

no he really wouldn't. If that is the case, hen he can hop in the ring at his leisure.

they don't do these things because they are ILLEGAL...and they are illegal for a reason...and it isn't because they do not work. i'm not saying a kempo/kaju guy would get off a whole sequence like they are done in class...but they are not, and never were meant to be taken that literally. they are vehicles if you will to learn other things. so its not the technique, but what you learn from the technique that matters most.

I respectfully disagree. They don't do chops to the throat, elbows in the back or shots to the groin in the UFC because there are rules against such things. In UFC/Pride, you can shoot in to takedown w/o fear of getting an elbow to the back or having a weapon pulled out on you because of rules. Don't have that guarantee on the street. Even MMA coaches/trainers will tell you training for the ring against one opponent is different from training for the street.

It's like people confuse what works with a referee one opponent on a padded surface with rules with real life. by the same logic "I never see anyone getting sho tor stabbed in the UFC or in PRIDE, so therefore guns and knives don't work, body will stand and let you cut the. Oh yeah, and stealth bombers and neuclear weapons are useless since I've never seen anyone get killed by them in the UFC.
